Description
This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is powered by a 2.8-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed automatic transmission and is finished in Light Ivory over brown MB-Tex. Equipment includes a brown convertible top, a brown removable hardtop, power steering, and 14″ steel wheels with painted covers. The current owner acquired the car out of Iowa in 2011, and work in 2022 reportedly involved a valve adjustment, a reseal of the power steering pump and fuel tank, and replacement of the thermostat, spark plugs, distributor, differential pinion seal, right rear axle seal, and front brake components. This W113 SL is now offered on dealer consignment with manufacturer’s literature, a tool kit, service records, a car cover, and a clean Florida title.
The W113 SL was designed by Friedrich Geiger, Béla Barényi, and Paul Bracq and was introduced to the public at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show. This example is finished in Light Ivory (670) and was repainted in 2011 following rust and dent repairs around the body. A replacement brown soft top was also installed at that time, and a brown removable hardtop accompanies the vehicle. The seller notes that both fenders have been replaced and there is rust on the rear panel.
The 14″ steel wheels feature covers with painted centers and are mounted with 185 /75 Cooper tires. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is provided by power-assisted four-wheel discs. The front brake calipers, rotors, and pads are said to have been replaced in 2022.
The cabin houses bucket seats upholstered in brown MB-Tex that extends to the door panels. The carpets were replaced, the headliner repainted, and the wood trim refurbished in 2011. The seller notes that the air conditioning is inoperative and the Becker AM/FM radio intermittently works. There are cracks in the dash pad.
The two-spoke steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and frames a 140-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline as well as gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 7k miles, which is not considered to be accurate. Total mileage is unknown. The speedometer cable was replaced in 1995.
The 2.8-liter M130 inline-six was factory equipped with Bosch fuel injection and was rated at 180 horsepower and 193 lb-ft of torque when new. Work in 2022 involved a valve adjustment, installing an electronic distributor, resealing the power steering pump and fuel tank, and replacing the thermostat, spark plugs, and fluids. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The rear differential pinion seal and right rear axle seal were replaced in 2022. There is rust in the right rear floor.
