The “Nuvo Japonica” Mercedes-Benz SLK320 was commission by Globus Foundation. Yet another master piece by Laurence Gartel, the Father of Digital Art.
About the SLK320 NUVO JAPONICA, from GARTEL:
In 1989 I was asked to exhibit my work at the Joan Whitney Payson Gallery in Portland, Maine.
At one point Mrs. Payson owned the New York Mets Baseball team. As a philanthropist and Art Collector she had one of the greatest impressionist collections in the world. The Gallery was considered the “Jewel Box” of America. When the Van Gogh “Irises” were sold at Sotheby’s auction house to industrialist Alan Bond for $53-million dollars, “Nuvo Japonica” replaced it on its very wall. There was tremendous press regarding “Computer Art” replacing impressionism and was a landmark moment in Contemporary Art. During this very same time, my cover of Forbes was released October 1989. It was seen by millions of people and the notoriety of the work was made aware to millions. To complete the “trifecta” my book, “Laurence Gartel: A Cybernetic Romance”
was published by Gibbs Smith in Utah. It was a moment of enlightenment for Digital Art even though I had been working on it for 15-years prior and already in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art.
Judith Sobol, the Director and Curator of the Joan Whitney Payson Gallery felt that “Nuvo Japonica”
was the true future of Art. Ms. Sobol went on to be the director of the Cantor Foundation who holds the largest collection of 1200 Rodin sculptures.
NUVO JAPONICA was shown at the Verbum Gallery of Art in San Diego, and exhibited at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Selby Gallery of Art in 1991. Also shown at the LeVall Gallery in Novosibirsk, Russia in 2001 which bases its exhibition on “Art without Borders.”
Fast forwarding, philanthropists Ric and Steve Globus awarded me a “Lifetime Achievement Award” with a trip to Japan in 2014. I was to create a second series “Nuvo Japonica 2” twenty-five years later. On the untimely death of twin brother Ric Globus, the Globus Foundation commissioned me to produce an Art Car combining and merging the Art over decades. Steve Globus contributes to the Japan Society in New York City and sponsors an Artist each year to come to America and make Art. My trip to Japan was the first time an American Artist was sponsored in the other direction, thus creating much interest and excitement.
Prior to “Nuvo Japonica” I used this same vehicle to create an Art Car for Mercedes Benz Stuttgart headquarters directly.
They posted it on all their social media accounts as well as through their e-mercedes network of dealerships and owners throughout the world.
